Sistem rudal pertahanan itu diklaim mampu mencegat atau menembak jatuh rudal balistik jarak pendek dan menengah serta pesawat tak berawak.
Para pejabat AS dan Eropa telah menyatakan keprihatinannya bahwa Rusia baru-baru ini mengerahkan rudal berkemampuan nuklir ke Kaliningrad, wilayah Rusia yang berada di kawasan pantai Baltik di antara Polandia dan Lithuania.
Seorang pejabat pertahanan AS yang bertugas di Eropa mengatakan bahwa pengerahan rudal Iskander Rusia ke Kaliningrad adalah langkah terbesar dalam hal militerisasi Rusia terhadap Baltik.
”Mereka selalu memiliki rudal balistik di sana, jenis rudal ini membawa jangkauan yang jauh lebih lama daripada sebelumnya,” kata pejabat tersebut kepada CNN yang menolak diidentifikasi.
Dia mengatakan rudal berkemampuan nuklir Moskow itu berpotensi mengancam sebagian besar wilayah Polandia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Jerman dan Swedia.
”Penjualan ini merupakan respons tidak hanya aktivitas militer Rusia yang meningkat, namun juga kenyataan bahwa Rusia memodernisasi kemampuan penyerangan Angkatan Udara dan jangkauan jangka panjangnya,” kata Magnus Nordenman, direktur Transatlantic Security Initiative yang berbasis di Washington, kepada CNN, yang dilansir Minggu (25/2/2018).
”Rusia mungkin tidak memiliki banyak rudal pesawat terbang dan rudal jarak jauh seperti yang dilakukan Uni Soviet selama Perang Dingin, namun sistem Rusia saat ini jauh lebih mampu daripada nenek moyang Perang Dingin mereka,” ujarnya.
Sekutu-sekutu Amerika di wilayah Eropa telah mencari kemampuan yang memungkinkan untuk melawan rudal-rudal Moskow.
Polandia mengumumkan ketertarikannya pada sistem rudal Patriot AS. Pada November 2017, Departemen Luar Negeri AS mentujui opsi penjualan senjata pertahanan itu dengan nilai USD10 miliar.
