Bersama dengan Prancis dan Inggris, AS melancarkan serangan udara terhadap pemerintahan Presiden Bashar al-Assad, seminggu setelah muncul dugaan penggunaan senjata kimia di kota Douma.
Presiden Vladimir Putin menyatakan kecaman keras pada Sabtu, 14 April 2018, dan menggambarkan serangan tersebut sebagai tindakan agresi terhadap negara berdaulat yang tengah berperang melawan terorisme.
Di sisi lain, Departemen Keuangan AS akan mengumumkan sanksi baru terhadap Rusia pada Senin ini.
Menurut Duta Besar AS untuk PBB, Nikki Halley, sanksi tersebut diberikan karena Negeri Beruang Merah dituding terlibat dalam penggunaan senjata kimia di Suriah.
“Sanksi untuk Rusia akan segera diumumkan pada Senin ini, sebagai upaya penegasan kembali tentang tanggung jawab terhadap penggunaan senjata kimia oleh Assad,” jelas Haley.
Sebelumnya, AS telah mengusir para diplomat Rusia keluar dari Negeri Paman Sam, sekaligus membenarkan tuduhan keterlibatan peracunan agen saraf pada mantan mata-mata di Inggris.
