Pendeta Martin Niemoller menjelaskan bahwa ia hanya peduli dengan kesejahteraan gereja dan rakyat Jerman. Hitler menukas, “Anda batasi diri Anda pada gereja. Saya yang akan mengurusi rakyat Jerman.” Niemoller menjawab itu dipercayakan kepada kita oleh Tuhan, dan tidak seorang pun termasuk Anda di dunia ini yang punya kuasa untuk mengambilnya dari kami.”

Persidangan Dr. Niemoller dimulai pada tanggal 1 Februari 1938. pagi itu, seorang penjaga berseragam hijau mengawal pendeta itu dari selnya dan melewati serangkai lorong bawah tanah menuju keruang sidang. Niemoller dikuasai rasa takut dan sepi. Apa yang bakal menimpa dirinya? Keluarganya? Gerejanya? Siksaan apa yang menanti mereka semua?
Wajah penjaga itu tidak memperlihatkan emosi apa-apa dan ia membisu seribu bahasa. Namun saat mereka keluar dari lorong untuk menaiki anak tangga terakhir, Niemoller mendengar bisikan. Pada mulanya ia tidak tahu dari mana datangnya suara itu, karena suara itu lembut seperti desahan. Lalu ia sadar bahwa petugas itu sedang membisikkan ditelingnya kata-kata dalam Amsal 18:10: Nama Tuhan adalah menara yang kuat, ke sanalah orang benar berlari dan ia menjadi selamat.
Rasa takut Niemoller lenyap, dan kuasa ayat itu menopangnya melewati persidangan dan tahun-tahun yang di lewatinya di kamp konsentrrasi Nazi.
