[AkhirZaman.org] David Brainard adalah seorang pria mudah yang rapuh, mengidap TBC, sakit-sakitan dan mudah tertekan. Ia ingin sekali menjangkau orang-orang Indian pada zaman colonial Amerika, tetapi petualangannya yang pertama kali ke sebuah suku bangsa di Massachusett di sambut dengan bahaya. Tanpa sepengetahuannya, setiap gerak-geriknya di monitor para pejuang yang bermaksud membunuhnya. Namun saat mereka menaikan busur mereka, mereka melihat seekor ular derik merayap disampingnya, menaikan kepalanya, menjentikkan lidahnya, siap untuk menyerang. Tiba-tiba ular itu berhenti bergelung dan pergi. Para pejuang menganggap penyelamat Brainard sebagai “Roh yang agung”.

Namun, insiden tersebut tidak menimbulkan dampak baik pada usaha penginjilannya dan karya missionary Brainard pada tahun 1743 tidak begitu berhasil. Depresinya semakin bertambah menjelang natal. Ia menulis, “saya sangat kelelahan dengan perjalanan saya, di mana saya mengalami kesukaran yang besar; lebih terpapar dan kebasahan karna tercebur ke dalam sungai”.  Tahun berikutnya tidak lebih baik, ia bahkan semakin tertekan.

Pada tanggal 3 januari 1745, Brainard menyisihkan satu hari penuh untuk berdoa dan berpuasa, memohon kecurahan kuasa Roh. Ia menyatakan janji pada Yohanes 7 “Berimanlah kepada-Ku, maka kamu akan menerimah air pemberi hidup yang mengalir dari dalam hatimu…”

Lalu ia berulangkali berkhotbah dari Yohanes 7, dan tahun berikutnya terbukti menjadi tahun tersukses dalam pelayanannya.  Penerjemahnya, seorang alkoholik bernama Tattamy, bertobat. Suatu perubahan yang segera tampaknya mengubah kehidupan Tattamy dan terjemahannya atas khotbah-khotbah Brainard. Banyak orang Indiana diselamatkan dan di baptis.

Brainard bertambah lemah pada tahun 1747 ia meninggal pada usia 29 tahun di rumah Jonathan Edwards. Namun kisanya menggerakkan generasinya—Henry Martyn, William Carey, Adoniram Johnson—terhadap misi-misi penginjilan. Buku hariannya menjadi salah satu buku Kristen yang paling berpengaruh dalam sejarah Amerika, mencakup tulisan seperti yang satu ini: Inilah aku, utuslah aku, utuslah aku keujung dunia; utuslah aku kepada orang-orang kasar ini, orang-orang kafir yang buasa di padang belantara; utuslah aku dari semua yang di sebut kenyamanan dunia; utuslah aku bahkan kepada kematian itu sendiri, seandainya ya, tetapi dalam pelayanan-Mu dan untuk meninggikan kerajaan-Mu.

Bagaimana mereka mendengar tentang Dia, jika tidak ada yang memberitakan-Nya?  Dan bagaimana mereka dapat memberitakan-Nya, jika mereka tidak diutus? Seperti ada tertulis: “Betapa indahnya kedatangan mereka yang membawa kabar baik!“ Roma 10:14,15
