RAF mengonfirmasi adanya “peringatan reaksi cepat” dengan melesatkan dua pesawat jet tempur Typhoon dari markas Lossiemouth di Skotlandia. Kejadian ini berlangsung hari Senin.
”Pesawat Rusia pada awalnya dipantau oleh berbagai (pesawat) tempur negara yang ramah dan kemudian dicegat oleh RAF di Laut Utara,” kata Angkatan Udara Kerajaan Inggris dalam sebuah pernyataan.
”Tidak ada gunanya pesawat Rusia memasuki wilayah udara Inggris yang berdaulat,” lanjut pernyataan tersebut, seperti dikutip ABC News, Selasa (16/1/2018).
Militer Belgia juga mengonfirmasi pengerahan dua pesawat jet tempur F-16 Belgia dari sebuah pangkalan di Florennes untuk mencegat pesawat Rusia tersebut.
“Hari ini (Senin), 2 F16 @BeAirForce berhasil mencegat 2 pembom TU-160 Blackjack Rusia di atas Laut Utara, di wilayah Belanda yang responsif dari wilayah udara NATO. Karena penerbangan supersonik, F16 Belgia dapat menyelesaikan misi mereka, menjamin keamanan Anda,” kata Angkatan Udara Belgia melalui akun Twitter-nya, @BeAirForce.
Militer Rusia belum berkomentar atas aksi pencegatan dua pesawat pembomnya oleh sepasang jet tempur tempur Inggris dan Belgia. Moskow selama ini mengklaim penerbangan pesawat militernya sesuai aturan internasional.
Insiden itu salah satu dari beberapa kejadian serupa dalam beberapa tahun terakhir karena pesawat militer Rusia menguji pertahanan udara NATO dan Inggris.
Pekan lalu, HMS Westminster, sebuah kapal frigat Type 23 yang berbasis Portsmouth, diperintahkan untuk mencegat dua kapal perang dan dua kapal pendukung yang melewati perairan Inggris.
