[AkhirZaman.Org] Seorang insinyur berusia 29 tahun untuk Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Tsutomu Yamaguchi, sedang dalam perjalanan bisnis di Hiroshima, Jepang, ketika AS menjatuhkan bom atom pertama. Pada pagi hari tanggal 6 Agustus 1945, Yamaguchi melompat turun dari trem sewaktu bom atom, yang dijuluki “bocah Kecil”, meledak di atas Hiroshima.

Yamaguchi mengatakan dia berada kurang dari dua mil dari ground zero ketika dia melihat kilatan cahaya yang menyilaukan. Kemudian gendang telinganya pecah dan bagian atas tubuhnya terbakar oleh ledakan yang  mengikutinya. Ledakan itu menghancurkan sebagian besar bangunan kota dan menewaskan 80.000 orang. Yamaguchi menghabiskan malam yang menyakitkan di tempat perlindungan bom dan hari berikutnya kembali ke kampung halamannya di Nagasaki, 200 mil jauhnya.

Pada 9 Agustus, Yamaguchi pergi ke kantornya di Nagasaki, tempat dimana dia menceritakan pada bosnya mengenai ledakan mengerikan di Hiroshima. Tepatnya ketika bom kedua, yang dikenal sebagai “Fat Man” dijatuhkan di Nagasaki, menewaskan 70.000 orang di sana. Yamaguchi berkata, “Tiba-tiba cahaya putih yang sama memenuhi ruangan. Saya pikir awan jamur telah mengikuti saya dari Hiroshima. Aku bisa saja mati dengan mudah pada hari-hari itu.”

Yamaguchi menjadi satu-satunya karyawan sebagai saksi mata yang selamat dari kedua ledakan atom yang menghantam Jepang dalam Perang Dunia II.

Enam hari setelah serangan Nagasaki, Jepang menyerah. Yamaguchi pulih dari luka-lukanya, bekerja untuk pasukan pendudukan Amerika, menjadi guru, dan akhirnya kembali bekerja di Mitsubishi. Dia dalam kesehatan yang baik untuk sebagian besar hidupnya, kata putrinya; meskipun paparan radiasi ganda, ia hidup sampai 93 tahun.
