Pagi – pagi benar hari Sabtu, 4 januari 1577, algojo mendatangi sel Hans dan memerintahkan ia untuk menjuluran lidahnya. Diatasnya, ia menusukkan sebuah penahan lidah dari besi, mengencangkan dengan besi penahan. Lalu ia membakar ujung lidah Hans dengan besi merah menyala sehingga lidah itu akan bengkak dan tidak bisa lolos dari penahannya. Para opsir tidak ingin Hans berkhotbah pada pelaksaan hukuman matinya. Pria muda ini dibawa dengan gerobak kepasar, diikat ketiang dengan rantai dan dibakar hidup – hidup.
Ditengah kerumunan, hans yang lain mengamati dengan rasa takut—Hans de Ries, pendeta dan sahabat Bret. Setelah abunya dingin, ia mengais – ngais diantara debu dan memperoleh sebuah tanda mata — penahan lidah yang jatuh dari tubuh Hans yang telah hancur. Tidak lama kemudian, Hans de Ries menikahi ibu Hans Bret, dan penahan lidah itu menjadi simbol yang diteruskan dari generasi ke generasi.
