Kerumunan orang banyak berkumpul di sepanjang jalan, dan Luther berkhotbah pada setiap perhentian. Namun saat ia semakin mendekat ke Worms ketegangan semakin memuncak. Sahabat-sahabat memperingatkan bahwa ia akan mengalami nasib yang sama dengan Jhon Hus. “Walaupun Hus dibakar,”jawab luther,”kebakaran tidak terbakar, dan Kristus tetap hidup . . . aku akan pergi ke Worms, walaupun di sana ada banyak iblis seperti banyaknya genting di atap.”
Kedatangan Luther di Worms diumumkan oleh pengawas kota yang meniup terompetnya, dan ribuan orang pun berkumpul. Melangkah turun dari keretanya, Luther berbisik, “ Tuhan menyertaiku.” Tidak lama kemudian, ia berdiri dihadapa Kaisar Charles V dan kongres. Ketegangan semakin menebal seperti kabut, dan Luther, yang tampaknya kehilangan keberanian, bergumul dan tampaknya hampir pingsan. Namun keesokan harinya, dia dikuatkan oleh doa ia menggemakan pertahanannya tentang kecukupan Kitab Suci. “Aku tidak bisa dan tidak akan menarik kembali!”begitu katanya.”Disini aku berdiri. Kiranya Tuhan menolongku. Amin.”Kongres itu menjadi riuh karena kebingungan dan tiba-tiba ditangguhkan. Sahabat-sahabat Luther dengan segera menyemangati. Belakangan Luther berkata, “Aku tidak merasa takut. Aku tidak takut pada apapun. Tuhan dapat membuat seseorang begitu berani.”
Dan itulah kesaksian orang-orang yang semuanya berdiri sendirian bagi Kristus pada masa-masa penuh bahaya.
Dan Tuhan akan melepaskan aku dari setiap usaha yang jahat. Dan akan menyelamatkan aku, sehingga aku masuk ke dalam kerajaan-Nya di sorga (2Timotius 4:18a)
