Menteri Pertahanan James Norman Mattis dan Ketua Kapal Staf Gabungan Jenderal Joseph F. Dunford Jr., keduanya berargumen dengan tegas bahwa diplomasi digunakan untuk mengatasi ambisi nuklir Pyongyang.
Pada Agustus lalu, Mattis mengatakan sebuah perang dengan Korea Utara akan menjadi bencana besar.
